01 / The place

Sarasota, in four short reads.

01

The shape of it

A compact, walkable downtown on the bay, ringed by established neighbourhoods, with a chain of barrier islands just offshore: Lido, St. Armands, Longboat, Bird, Siesta and Casey Key. The arts institutions are concentrated here, and they are the reason a lot of people choose Sarasota over the alternatives.

02

Housing

The most varied and generally the most expensive of the five. Downtown is largely condo, from mid rise to high rise on the bayfront. Inland are older single family neighbourhoods on smaller lots. On the keys, prices climb steeply and insurance and flood considerations become a much bigger part of the equation.

03

Getting around

Sarasota Bradenton International is about ten minutes from downtown, which is unusually close for a city this size. The bottleneck is the islands. A handful of bridges carry everything, and in season the drive onto Siesta or Longboat takes far longer than the mileage suggests.

04

Worth knowing

The Ringling is a 66 acre bayfront estate with the art museum, the circus museum and Ca' d'Zan, the Ringling mansion. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is the purple building on the bayfront that everyone uses as a landmark. St. Armands Circle, laid out by John Ringling in 1917, is the island shopping and dining hub.

A circus fortune bought the culture

Sarasota has an arts scene out of all proportion to its size, and the reason is John Ringling. He wintered the circus here, made a fortune, and in 1927 left the city an art museum, a Venetian Gothic mansion on the bay called Ca' d'Zan, and the grounds they sit on. Florida State University has run it since 2000 and it is the official State Art Museum of Florida. The Circus Museum on the same campus is the part children remember. Everything else, the opera, the ballet, the theatres, grew in that soil.

The sand is genuinely different

Siesta Key is not just marketing. The sand is about 99 percent quartz, washed down from the Appalachians over millions of years with the feldspar and mica ground out of it. It stays cool enough to walk barefoot at midday, which no shell based beach manages. TripAdvisor has put it top in the country three times since 2015. The catch is parking, and the answer is to arrive before ten or after four.

04 / In season and out

What the calendar does to Sarasota.

This is where the region's season is most visible. Sarasota County roads run about 14% above the annual average in early March, and the beach category is the highest in the county at about 15%.

Peak season as FDOT counts it, late January to late April. Tap a month to see what is on.

On the road, in season

  • The Ringling Causeway to St. Armands and Longboat, and Stickney Point Road and Siesta Drive to Siesta Key, are where season shows up first. Weekend afternoons in March are the slowest.
  • US 41 through downtown and the bayfront is busiest during the winter concert and festival calendar.
  • Parking, not the drive, is the real season problem on the keys. Go early or take the trolley.

Our read from driving it every week, not a measurement. No routing service sells seasonal traffic data.

  • Marie Selby Botanical GardensBayfront gardens near downtown
  • Marie Selby Botanical Gardens 0.8 mi · ~4 min

Bayfront gardens built around one of the world's great collections of orchids and epiphytes, on the grounds of the Selby and Payne estates. Small enough for an hour, good enough for three.

  • The Bay Park 0.9 mi · ~5 min

A 53 acre public park being built out along the bayfront, with a playground, mangrove boardwalks and a performance lawn. Free, and the clearest sign of where downtown is heading.

  • Sarasota Art Museum 1.6 mi · ~6 min

Contemporary art in a converted 1926 high school, run by Ringling College. Rotating exhibitions only, no permanent collection, so it is worth rechecking.

  • Ed Smith Stadium 2.3 mi · ~8 min

Spring training home of the Baltimore Orioles since 2010, seating about 8,500. Grapefruit League games through March, and the ticket prices are a fraction of a regular season seat.

  • St. Armands Circle 3.0 mi · ~8 min

A ring of shops and restaurants on Lido Key laid out around a statuary garden, another Ringling idea. Park once, walk the circle, then carry on to Lido Beach at the end of the road.

  • Sarasota Jungle Gardens 2.9 mi · ~10 min

Ten acres of tropical garden operating since 1939, with flamingos you can feed, a reptile show and shaded paths. Firmly aimed at younger children and very good at it.

  • The Ringling 4.0 mi · ~11 min

The State Art Museum of Florida, bequeathed in 1927. Twenty one galleries strong on Rubens and the European baroque, the Ca' d'Zan mansion on the bay, the Circus Museum, a rose garden and the historic Asolo Theater. Give it most of a day.

  • Mote Science Education Aquarium 9.0 mi · ~21 min

Mote's public aquarium, which moved from City Island to a new 110,000 square foot building by University Town Center when Mote SEA opened in October 2025. Sharks, rays, sea turtles and a serious research operation behind it. The old City Island aquarium is closed, so do not drive there.

  • Save Our Seabirds 4.4 mi · ~12 min

A rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary for injured wild birds on City Island. Small, inexpensive, and unusually easy to talk to the people doing the work.

  • Siesta Key Beach 7.0 mi · ~18 min

Sand that is roughly 99 percent quartz, which is why it stays cool underfoot in August. Ranked top in the country by TripAdvisor three times since 2015. Arrive before ten or plan on the shuttle.

  • Myakka River State Park 22.8 mi · ~35 min

37,000 acres, opened in 1941, one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks. The canopy walkway was the first public treetop trail in North America: 100 feet of suspension bridge 25 feet up, with a 74 foot tower at the end. Alligators are a certainty, not a maybe.
